William J. Sterner - President Print E-mail
In April of 1973, Bill began his career with Allegheny Power as an apprentice lineman working out of the Charleroi Service Center. During his 32 years of employment, he progressed to Lead Lineman, working in that capacity until he took a leave of absence in 1997 to serve as the elected President of System Local 102. However, Bill’s career with the Utility Workers Union of America began much earlier. Early on he became an active union member of Local 102-G and served as union steward at the Charleroi Service Center. Becoming more concerned with workers’ rights and safety in the workplace, Bill took a more active role in his local and was elected vice-president and later secretary/treasurer for several terms. Realizing the important role that politics will always play in the advancement of the Labor Movement, he became politically active. Bill is currently the Washington County Democratic Committee Person representing Twilight Borough as well as the Vice-President of Twilight Borough Council. His being a delegate to the Mon Valley and Washington/Greene Labor Councils were also important influences on his career reinforcing his political beliefs in respect to the Labor Movement.

In 1991, Bill was elected as System Secretary/Treasurer of Local 102. He served in that capacity for 6 years. The position of Secretary/Treasurer earned him a seat on the 102 Executive Board, the 102 Executive Committee and the 102 Negotiating Team. In 1997, Bill was elected as President of the System, serving approximately 1,200 members in the central and western regions of Pennsylvania, parts of Maryland and West Virginia and a small portion of Virginia. He was also elected, at that time, to the Executive Board of the International Utility Workers Union of America, representing Region II. In 2004, Bill was elected to the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO Executive Council, representing utility workers state wide.
