When is my Local meeting?

Answer:

  • Branch locals have their meeting on the same day every month and always advertise the meeting on their union bulletin board at your service center. If you can't find it, contact a System officer.

How do I find out who my Local Union Officers are?

Answer:

  • Most locals post the officers on the union bulletin board at your service center. If you can't find that information, contact a System officer.

How do I know what rights I have?

Answer:

  • The union contract covers almost every right you have on the job, but some practices the union has won through grievances may not be easy to find or understand in the contract.
  • You should always ask a Local Union Officer or Steward if you have any questions.

As a new hire, how do I sign up for hospitalization?

Answer:

  • On your first day of work you should meet with your union rep and he will help you fill out the forms for your medical insurance. (link to faqs on insurance)

How much are my union dues?

Answer:

  • Union dues are currently two times your hourly rate. They are taken out of your paycheck once a month. (Union dues cannot be used for political purposes. You can make an additional contribution just for that purpose.)

What do my dues get used for?

Answer:

  • The union maintains an office, and full time staff that help you with problems when they arise. The union accrues expenses such as phones, mailings, arbitrations, lawyers, negotiations and other costs that are part of running a large organization.

  • We also pay a portion of our dues to our international. It takes more than a few thousand guys at one power company to have a real voice in the power industry.

Where do I sign up for dental insurance?

I've never heard of this union. Where can I find out more?

If I'm assigned a dangerous job, what can I do about it?

Answer:

  • Many of our jobs are dangerous, which is why we've established strong safety rights in our contract.
  • Each local also has a safety committee representative. Read your contract and contact your representative if you have concerns.
